You may want to sit down for this one. Did you know that, at this very moment, you may have fish scales on your lips? It's true. It turns out that the key ingredient in some of the prettiest and most expensive lipsticks is fish scales. And it's all because of physics.

You may have noticed that some fish have a shimmery luster to them. This is due to the presence of an organic compound known as guanine in the fish's scales. Guanine's irregular crystalline structure allows it to reflect light in different directions and angles. This diffusion of light rays gives guanine a shimmery and iridescent appearance making it ideal for high-end cosmetics.

In addition to lipsticks, you can also find the crystalline compound in eyeshadow, foundation, lotion, and nail polish, just to name a few. The more you know!
