French automobile manufacturer Renault recently provided a behind-the-scenes look at how the company prototypes its future all-electric Renault 5. The process occurs at Renault’s Global Production Engineering Center, a 25-year-old location inside the company’s Technocenter engineering complex near Paris.

The Global Production Engineering Center is accessible only to authorized Renault personnel, and according to the automaker, it is attempting to produce more than 60 vehicles that represent the all-electric Renault 5. The Renault 5’s existence begins at the company’s Prototype Build Center, where all future production model prototypes are developed.

The process starts with mules that technically represent the future production version. Renault began manufacturing the Renault 5 mules in October 2021 and tested them as part of the development process for the vehicle’s fully electric CMF-B EV platform. According to Renault, the company is currently driving camouflaged prototypes on European roads. Renault sometimes even tests the vehicles in extreme conditions, including intense heat and cold and mountainous terrain.

Renault also tests all connectors, electronics, and software during this prototyping phase, and the company said the location’s proximity to the Technocenter allows for quick responses to questions. All data recorded during testing helps Renault refine the model and make final adjustments before it reaches customers.

The all-electric Renault 5 is based on the company’s original Renault 5, which launched in 1972. The company revealed a concept of the future electric vehicle in 2021 and expects to unveil a final production version next year.
